Hearth Tree Fabrication Photos

For the College of the Ozarks, Keeter Center, designers wanted to make a statement at the main hearth in the sitting area at the end of the Great Hall.  In lieu of a mantel, it was decided that a full size tree would be a better fit for the hearth due to the sheer mass of the rock wall which runs continuous from the floor to the ceiling.  After some debate and consideration as to the type of tree to install at the hearth, it was decided that a native ashe juniper would be best for this particular application.  The general form of the juniper works well for this application as they are generally short and tend to branch out quickly with whimsical and aesthetically pleasing limbs.

Below are the photos of the fabrication and installation of the hearth tree.  To see more photos of the completed installation of this tree visit our Architectural Accent Gallery.

Reattachment of one of the limbs that had to be removed for transport of the tree. Additional limbs were added to the tree to give it more full appearance.

The limb on the left is another of the limbs that were removed and reattached to accommodate transport. The completed tree installed on the hearth.  The tree measures 13' wide x 8' deep x 21' high and weighs nearly 1000 lbs total.
